Students' Learning Experience and Feedback

1.Great! make me learnt so much. i learnt more abt the databases during the process of making this website more than i do when i go for tutorial...hehe:P great module!

ABDUL RAZAK BIN JAFFAR SCI10092@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

2.very interesting and tiring as well but it was fun creating a website and did a dry-lab as usually i always do wet-lab no comments

ADIA PRANATALIA LIM SCI11095@nus.edu.sg 13/3/2003

3.Well, it is a very good way of manking us do on-hand work. And it would be very useful for future use. -

AISHAH BTE MOHAMED SAID SCI10899@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

4.Pretty informative, but very exhuasting due to having to do repeated BLASTs and checking of information over a vast range of biological databases available online. But i guess that this fact alone is reflective of real life situations where researchers have to do repeated ventures in the struggle to fully sequence and categorise sequences genomes For the project, it would be better if the TAs and lecturers are able to more clearly express themselves and their wishes.

ANG SHU HUI SCI10417@nus.edu.sg 14/3/2003

5.tedious. enable us to know how to make use of the available databases to find unknown genes.

ANG XIAOMAN SCI10328@nus.edu.sg 13/3/2003

6.I am not a computer person. So i don't quite enjoy this module. It's just not my cup of tea.I made many mistakes while doing this project. I learnt from trial and error. I felt the process was very tedious and meticulous. So i've learnt to keep trying even when i fail and eventually i'll succeed. I think the project should be given at the start of the semester so we'll have more time to tinker around with the websites and for mistakes also. The TAs should give more info about the softwares used and the project in general.

ANUSHYA CHAINDRA RAJA SCI10349@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

7.Project is interesting. Organisation of infomation is important. It's tough initially, but when things start to roll, it becomes eaasier, sometimes a little mechanical. great project for ca2. percentage allocation of marks is ok/ can be raised considering the time taken to do the job.

ARTHUR LUHUR SCI10745@nus.edu.sg 28/2/2003

8.good chance to get familar with biological databases

AW YONG THENG THENG SCI11109@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

9.It's an interesting project which challenges an individual's bioinformatics skills. It also has given me a hands-on experience on what it is like to be in this bioinformatics field. Maybe there can be more tutorials or practicals teaching the usage of ClustalW software as it's one of the hardest step of the project.

AZLINA BTE MAJID SCI10892@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

10.I learnt a lot of new things and I really enjoyed doing this project. It would have been more interesting to use other databases like COG.

BAHETY PRIYANKA SCI10419@nus.edu.sg 28/2/2003

11.very interesting so far haven't :)

BUI THAI HOANG THU SCI11192@nus.edu.sg 28/2/2003

12.I think the project has been useful to get hands-on experience of the wonders of bioinformatics. There has been some discrepancy between the goals that the TA´s have been talking about and the goals that Prof Tan has talked about. Was confusing what we were actually supposed to do until the tutorials. Clearer goal definition is sought.

CECILIA JOHANSSON S0200718@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

13.interesting

CHAK LI LING SCI11262@nus.edu.sg 28/2/2003

14.tedious...nervewrecking but at the same time rewarding Should have more sessions on hands on practice instead of just going through ppt tutorials

CHAN ELIZA JANE SCI10757@nus.edu.sg 4/3/2003

15.It gave me a better understanding of what bioinformatics is. But due to time constrain, not all possibilities were explored totally.

CHAN QING LI SCI10381@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

16.I think that this project is quite a challenging and interesting one because it combining the uses of computers and biology which we never deal with in other life sciences module. Even though i face some difficulty in doing this, i eventually learn something new at the end of the day. I think that we probably should have more hours on the practical just to improve the theory because it is really hard to grab the idea during lectures without actually do it.

CHANDRA DEBORAH SCI11228@nus.edu.sg 13/3/2003

17.too time consuming and difficult to do for first timer needed more time to produce a better project ,especially for first timer who know nothing about webpage making

CHANG CHI-YAO,BENJAMIN SCI10112@nus.edu.sg 3/3/2003

18.enables me to gain some computer knowledge. Nil.

CHEN WANYING SCI10617@nus.edu.sg 13/3/2003

19.it seems very hard initially..not the website making, rather the information on it.Many a time, we don;t know why we are doing certain steps that we were told to perform. Can more explicit explanations be given? as in, ClustalW is used for what exactly? so what if we get the dendrogram?

CHEN XIUFEN,CALLIE SCI10490@nus.edu.sg 9/3/2003

20.The project has been a really tedious one but nonetheless,it's been a revelation working on it once i saw the whole point of it. It was really useful in opening up insights on research areas and more accurately design and customize one's wet projects based on the inferences drawn from the results. This would save a lot of precious time. For now, i m just glad it's finally over... :)

CHEN ZHI XIONG SCI10105@nus.edu.sg 9/3/2003

21.Time consuming but learnt lots of things!!!

CHENG HIN TING SCI11208@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

22.generally provide us with the hand on experience on using the different tools to perform the various searches as well as using the databases to search for the revelant information.but it is a bit blur in the beginning as how to start the project

CHENG LILIAN SCI10116@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

23.it was interesting but really tedious because of the many steps that we have to go through to get the results. the TAs could be better instructed on the steps of the proj. they couldn't really explain to me the purpose of carrying out certain steps and contradicted each other occasionally. overall, the tutorials were not very well written either. and no tutorial was carried out regarding how to interpret prosite, which was a last minute addition.

CHENG SHI MIN SCI10346@nus.edu.sg 4/3/2003

24.OK.

CHEONG YUH MENG,CLEMENT SCI10195@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

25.it's pretty alright... not too time consuming but still a headache

CHEW JIA ZHEN,GERALDINE SCI10487@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

26.Pretty interesting..however..it might be a little mind boggling figuring out how to do up a webpage esp if one is a greenhorn in this area..Anyway..one can never stop learning new things We should be given more time if possible to familiarise with something new like this. Prob making it a group project would be better?

CHIA PEILING,SERENE SCI10924@nus.edu.sg 27/2/2003

27.quite ok. nil

CHIA SHU HUI SCI10446@nus.edu.sg 10/3/2003

28.this project to some of the students is a nightmare because bioinformatics is new and many of the students have no foundation in doing webpage. furthermore, it can take up most of the time in doing the project. nil.

CHIA WEE WEE SCI10022@nus.edu.sg 5/3/2003

29.Check the author's notes section on the page :) The entire project can be quite daunting and fuzzy at first , especially to someone less computer-savvy ... don't really know how to suggest anything on how to improve as each student has a varying degree on how much he knows or can absorb . Oh well , it's been a fun trip !

CHIN KWONG CHEONG SCI11292@nus.edu.sg 28/2/2003

30.Not too time consuming, and is interesting, but a headache nevertheless on what should be included and what should not -

CHNG LI SHAN SCI10439@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

31.fun but tiring. learnt a lot of things, including webpage making.

CHONG HAO XIN SCI11052@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

32.It's really a totally new area to me. I learnt something through this project.

CHONG LAY CHIN,CHRISTINA SCI11255@nus.edu.sg 14/3/2003

33.its quite interesting..a bit tedious as well

CHONG RUILING SCI10401@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

34.useful that I can learn to create a webpage and get in touch with some biological softwares. But a bit time consuming. I think the TAs should give clearer instructions during tutorials.

CHONG SUE YUAN SCI10510@nus.edu.sg 3/3/2003

35.quite time consuming. problem of buiding up webpage more than the project ...

CHONG YUK KIEN SCI11066@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

36.There was so much confusion at the beginning as I didnt know what I was supposed to do and what was going on. Now, I am very glad that I have finished it and I feel quite proud of myself. Thanks to Dr. Tan and my TAs and my friend Haoxin. I really have learned a lot from them. thanks I hope more practical sessions can be carried out and more uses of biological databases can be demonstrated by TAs. Overall, individual learning and discussions with peers are very crucial.

CHOO SZE SZE SCI11134@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

37.Interesting and mind-opening, though at some times, the process can be tedious and frustrating. Make it pair work so that it won't be so tedious.

CHU KA HING,THERESA SCI10637@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

38.Should not have extended the dateline. It's a good way to force us to learn about making website. The no. of TAs should be more as they have difficulties attending to such a big class. Uploading 4 files each time is too slow. Maybe should consider easier and faster method of uploading files eg. using ftp.

CHUA CHER LING SCI10524@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

39.i would say that this is a challenging and fun project that has enabled me to learn in a hands-on manner. Over here, I would like to thank Prof Tan and my TAs Mr Justin Choo and Ms Bhuvana for their help and support. nil

CHUA YI JUN SCI11002@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

40.very timing consuming and tidieous. maybe we could have the TAs teach us slower and be clearer in their explanations. bacause at first i have no idea what i was suppose to do other than search for information from the different databases.

CHUA YILIN SCI10877@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

41.it was a fun and exasperating experience. I had to redo quite a bit of the project as some files went missing after I saved. Overall, it was enriching and satisfying. I learnt much more abt the databases compared to just reading abt them from the text n notes. nil

CHUAH SHIN CHET SCI10881@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

42.very interesting should be more challenging

DANG PUNEET KAUR PARAMJIT SINGH SCI11328@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

43.Its great...really amazing. I've learnt so much from it. Thank you to all TAs and lecturers for showing me a whole new world. Just carry on the great stuff:)

DEEPA PARKASH NANWANI SCI11009@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

44.It is very enriching and mind stimulating as well as broadening our scope of studies. I think the web designing part is the important part in that. Many improvement can be made on the tutorial and lab systems, especially regarding the class size. The tutorials/labs are totally ineffective with the current class size.

DODDY HIDAYAT SCI00007@nus.edu.sg 2/3/2003

45.its interesting some of my links dont work. when i uploaded they didnt convert properly..........i dont have time to do anything.....its 11.45 please be considerate. I have done all the work.its just the links that some of the links dont work But most of them would work.

DULESH NIVANTHA PEIRIS SCI11046@nus.edu.sg 1/3/2003

46.new to me in a sense that I have never done a webpage before. no.

EE HUI JING SCI10867@nus.edu.sg 10/3/2003

47.This project is really interesting. I really got a taste of what it's really like doing hands-on research. This is my first attempt in creating a webpage using Frontpage and it's pretty exciting. Such projects could also train students to be more independent in their learning process, rather than having the lecturers "hold their hands" as they learn. We should have more of such projects in future.

ENG GOI HUI SCI10747@nus.edu.sg 2/3/2003

48.This project is a very good way for us to go and explore the various databases and software.

ER HONG LING SCI11220@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

49.I think this project is really an experience for me as i never design a webpage for me . It's definitely an enriching experience and i am able to learn things related to biology but related to computer. I hope that during practical, more TAs can be available to guide and more guidance for the project be given

ER KOK LEONG SCI10035@nus.edu.sg 2/3/2003

50.quite interesting we may need more time to do it

ER YU SENG SCI11078@nus.edu.sg 2/3/2003

51.It is very interesting, although a bit time consuming. The structure of the proteins could be taught before this project to allow better deciphering of the data we found. It would allow better understanding of the genes we found and can widen the project limits

FONG ENG KIAT SCI10927@nus.edu.sg 2/3/2003

52.quite challenging none

FONG PENG LI SCI11267@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

53.this project has exposed us to the useful applications of bioinformatics. Most importantly, we learn to use these software and also the materials available on the internet & also results analysis. First timers working on web page has at least learned the basic skills to create a simple one. Such a project should be given to every batch of students as this is a fun way of learning.

FOONG SHU FEN,CHARLENE SCI10777@nus.edu.sg 9/3/2003

54.Challenging, i've learnt alot of things. However, it is very time consuming. nil

FU YINGHUI SCI10944@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

55.i think this is an very interesting project and I am glad that there was such a project. We should have more freedom to choose what we would like to do. for e.g, the whole class need not concentrate on one organism

GANDARUBAN GANTHA RUBY SCI10889@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

56.Before practical 2 there were lot of peoploe who were very uncertain of what was going, the whole idea of the project. Even after the briefing, i felt that we were just as clueless when we started doing this module. However, attending the pracicals the TAs shed some light on what was expected; that was a really big help! I think the TAs and other people who are assisiting in this module should come together and discuss what is required and expected out of it. There were much differing comments and instructions given by TAs from the different labs which consequently caused a lot of confusion and upsets among the students when we tried to discuss about the project.

GOH HUILING,WINNIE SCI10983@nus.edu.sg 10/3/2003

57.useful to a certain extent because actually, i think this module ought to be more 'hands on' rather than lectured.. kind of hard trying to understand what is going on in lectures.. with all the history of the evolution of this and that program.. the project defnitely gave me a chance to try out ^_^

GOH SHUANG RU SCI10690@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

58.fun and interesting but I think could do with a little more focus in the objective of what this project hopes to accomplish Nil

GOH WEN BIN,WILSON SCI10686@nus.edu.sg 14/3/2003

59.time consuming but it is a good way to get hands on in the module and through this project, certain concepts and functions of the different databases can be better understood.

GUAN XUE LI SCI10572@nus.edu.sg 13/3/2003

60.It helps us to learn not only about databases, but also about webpages.

HAN HUNG PEW MELISSA GRACE Y T SCI11148@nus.edu.sg 13/3/2003

61.i have learnt new skills of web publishing and had hands-on experience in using the programmes introduced during lectures. This project has improved my ability of doing online research and sieving out the huge amount of information i can find over the internet. This is a very realistic project as it deals with something at the scientific edge and not just obsolete info that one can find in the textbooks. Big thanks to the lecturer Prof Tan Tin Wee and my tutors for going over again and again about the project. Perhaps we could be given a project that involves some of the research that is going on in the various institutes here in NUS. We students can be made to help mining/generating info using the skills that we have acquired in the course. It would have been more meaningful :)

HAR JIA YI SCI10397@nus.edu.sg 6/3/2003

62.Interesting None

HEMA D/O ANBANANDAN SCI10383@nus.edu.sg 7/3/2003

63.This is really an interesting project, besides learning the knowledge,i also gain fun creating my own and first homepage! I really enjoy it! This is such an innovative way in teaching or CA.We are tested not on exam paper but the project which is presented in a webpage way.I hope this kind of system should be continued.

HO ZI ZONG SCI11087@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

64.It was an eye opener for someone ike me who has never done a webpage before. We should be given more time to learn how to use the search engines and Blast and ClutalW.

HUANG JINJIN,KIM SCI10874@nus.edu.sg 27/2/2003

65.It was fun searching and applying what we have learnt in class, esp when this involves real bactria instead of some make-up story haha, but it was really bad for first time webpage makers, really really frustrating to get around all the links and pics

HUANG SINONG SCI10755@nus.edu.sg 8/3/2003

66.It has been very enriching I think that the server should allow folders to be uploaded as well and not simply files as this will only complicate and make the folder messy. If the project were to be made for the website to be good then this aspect of the server uploading should be enforced. Or else a simple uploading to the ivle site should suffice.

INTHRANI D/O RAJA INDRAN SCI10345@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

67.Nice project. Fun. Fun but I wish the work I am doing is not done by ~50 others as well. I'd rather do individual projects with varied results, although I understand the difficulty in designing such a thing with ~350 students. Oh, and PLEASE allow subdirectory creation. I'd be most grateful if I have to repeat the module next semester :p

IZAD-YAR DANIEL RASHEED U0206423@nus.edu.sg 3/3/2003

68.very inspiring -

J VANITHA SCI10949@nus.edu.sg 2/3/2003

69.I think this kind of project can encourage us to do more research, we could involve in real research field, especially in the genoming of B. pseudomallei. I would really thank Prof. Tan Tin Wee and my TAs for their kind assistance. It's a very good beginning for us and we hope, someday that what we've learned would be very useful and would be able to contribute to our future research in the biological society.

JULES RUSLI U0206704@nus.edu.sg 9/3/2003

70.I feel that this project has brought us, as students up to a different level of understanding of our cirrculum. No longer are we supposed to just memorise concepts/theories but rather we can have a chance to experience what scientists outside the education world does. Harnessing the latest technology and databases has brought research of genomic studies to a higher and more sophisticated level. Special thanks to A/P Tan Tin Wee for his detailed and clear explanation and many thanks to teaching assistant, Mr Chen Xin for his help during the course of this project.

KANG HAN MEI,BRIDGET SCI10903@nus.edu.sg 14/3/2003

71.The project is useful as in we get to put in the skills that we have learnt. However, the objectives of the project could be clearer. My friends and i had some difficulty identifying what we are actually suppose to do. The project is a challenge and i have learnt much. Provide a clearer objective to the project.

KANG JINYING,JASMINE SCI11024@nus.edu.sg 3/3/2003

72.It has been very interesting to complete this project, as it presented a challenge I had never attempted before: presenting my findings in a webpage format. I can say that I have learned a lot from this exercise, the knowledge will be very useful for many years to come. I wish to thank Dr Tan Tin Wee and all the laboratory Teaching Assistants, for their precious advice and help.

KARMESWAREE GOVINTHAN NAIKEN SCI11150@nus.edu.sg 2/3/2003

73.It was very interesting, and I gained a lot of hands on skills in handling databases, alignment tools, literature sources and wep page making. I am in fact thankful for this project. nil

KEE QIULING,SHARLENE SCI10991@nus.edu.sg 8/3/2003

74.teaches me a lot about bioinformatics and the use of biological databases

KHAIRULZAD BIN SULAIMAN SCI10044@nus.edu.sg 1/3/2003

75.It was a good experience and I learnt a lot from this project. I found the research challenging and I learnt how to operate the various biological databases better. Also, it was very fun designing the webpage. I found this entire project very different from other biological projects and was initially quite worried because I have never designed a webpage nor dealt so closely with the gene and amino acid level of any organism before. However, thanks to the close guidance and useful help from the lecturers and TAs, I learnt so much and actually managed complete it even though I thought I could not do it!

KHOO KAH HUI,JOLEEN SCI10740@nus.edu.sg 4/3/2003

76.Quite a refreshing change from the usual written style, and provides added flexibility in terms of links and presentation style.

KOH HSING DEE SCI10746@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

77.Takes up alot of time. It does help us understand the tools used in bioinformatic because we use it so often until we r familiar with it.

KOH KAI JIANG SCI10166@nus.edu.sg 13/3/2003

78.Interesting and a good experience. Helps us exercise what we have learnt and gives us a chance to learn even more. May be different organisms can be assigned to different groups so that we can cross learn between groups.

KOH PEONY SCI10823@nus.edu.sg 2/3/2003

79.Really good in the sense that it is 'hands-on' kind of thing and having a good memory is not important in learning. Could improve on the time given for research because there is obviously so much to find out! Very interesting!

KOH WEI CHOON,ALVIN SCI10234@nus.edu.sg 27/2/2003

80.Gives a better understanding to using the softwares i.e BLAST, clustalW, etc.. also a better grip to i.e. GenBank data interpretation. There are more complicating tunning which can be done in the advance function of some engines i.e BLAST which at the point of project was not taught to us, therefore might hinder the accuracy of the results displayed on the webpage. Not all students have the prior knowledge of webpage design. Teaching them the general outlines of doing a webpage in WYSIWYG format does allow greater ease, however there's a need for more proper lesson to the real technical jargon and more minor details i.e. some students might not know how to create a link, bookmark ,etc.

KOK ZUI HUA SCI10268@nus.edu.sg 14/3/2003

81.interesting but time consuming

KONG SIEW CHING SCI11143@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

82.It is a bold attempt for life sciences students to learn to create webpages and brush up their computer skills in the terms of bioinformatics. Well concept however, it'll be ideal if the project requirements can be explained much more in details.

KONG ZHI QUAN,ERIC SCI10090@nus.edu.sg 4/3/2003

83.It's fun but challenging and quite scary

KUAH LI FANG SCI10734@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

84.It's very interesting

LAU ENOCH SCI10255@nus.edu.sg 16/3/2003

85.This project is interesting !!! (although it's a bit time comsuming). The tutorial sessions are really useful. There is an error in my webpage, although I uploaded the picture but it still does not show up in the webpage. Therefore, please click on the faulty picture beside " My step 1' results" to view the results. I am really sorry for the convenience caused. Have a nice day !!!!!!

LE THI TUONG VY SCI11124@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

86.very good chance to expose myself to learn to design a webpage which i always think that it's impossible for me to do so!and i get to learn a lot about the bioinformatics softwares. An unforgettable experience and i definitely learnt a lot from this. Prof Tan has been a great professor in teaching us especially the greenhorns in creating webpage. He is patient uwith us. The TA's had also been of great help to us.

LEE BIWEI SCI10610@nus.edu.sg 2/3/2003

87.This project really familiarize me with various bioinformatics search engines. I got a chance to practice what I have learnt and enhance my understanding. I think some useful literature or journals that explain the basic background of the project should be cited out.

LEE CHOOU KOOK SCI11279@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

88.was a real hands on project that gives us real situations and problems to over come.

LEE HAN-CHUNG,RANDY SCI10165@nus.edu.sg 2/3/2003

89.Although it was tough work doing everything,... and most of the time i didnt exactly know what was happening, i do believe that this is a worthwhile project to be done.. it provided a lot of hands-on exposure to those who are interested in pursuing a career in Bioinformatics..

LEE HONG XIAN,CHARMAINE SCI10395@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

90.I think that this project is very challenging and I learnt alot from it. Both biology knowledge and IT skills which I feel will help me later in life.

LEE MANSHI SCI10680@nus.edu.sg 14/3/2003

91.an excellent means of practise and assessment except tats its quite stressful for those without webpage experience mainly that it requires very long to do clustalw esp if you only have dialup (nus) at home

LEE SWEE KOK SCI10033@nus.edu.sg 28/2/2003

92.Quite interesting and gain in depth understanding of databases but a bit tough for us with little background knowlegde Hope the deadline can be extend

LEE XUEFEN SCI10500@nus.edu.sg 27/2/2003

93.Fun, enriching in the sense that we learnt the use of resources on the net. Overall its was rather comprehensive, though the TAs can elaborate more on the purpose of this project. Also, there was alot of confusion on what to do, which hopefully will be ironed out next semester

LEE YIE HOU SCI10288@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

94.I think it is a very enriching project.

LEONG E-LING,GERALDINE SCI10427@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

95.In the beginning, i was pretty clueless about what was going on, but at the end of the project, i somehow had gotten grasp of how to use the various databases and the meaning of doing the whole annotation. no...

LEOW YING LING SCI10073@nus.edu.sg 4/3/2003

96.This project has indeed achieved its objectives of giving us a hands on experience at bioformatics in practice.. i would like to thank Ms Cao for her patience and care, and all the help she's given me

LER CHIEW LEI SCI10896@nus.edu.sg 27/2/2003

97.in the beginning in order to find the results, much was learnt, but presenting it on a web pg was tedious and time consuming and did not help in gaining of any new knowledge. there could be a specific template so we just have to fill in the results we get and need not think how we are gonna present it and spend time linking all the pages.

LIANG SHIEN SCI10441@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

115.Good. Initially, the starting was difficult because there was too much confusion. But after that, it was smooth-sailing. The uploading part was difficult because it's Unix and case sensitive and no spaces etc, etc. Could improve on that glitch. The practical labs should be equipped with computer projectors & microphone, so that any demonstration can be done on the spot and we could practice straight away on our workstations at the same time.

Some Microbio experience is recommended in order to better understand phylogeny and non-Burkholderia genus pseudomallei relatives etc." But now that I've finished it, it's actually quite fun. A little strange to teach in lecture the tools we are supposed to use eg BLAST, ClustalW, only one day before the project submission. Don't understand their concepts yet, however supposed to use them expertly for project. Not good. Could try going through the earlier sequence similarity/homology and scoring matrices lectures(concepts) faster so that can get to the effective proper usage of BLAST etc. Our TAs and Prof Tan are very very willing to help, though. 156.I think the project gave us good experience on how to use research tools such as Blast, translation, extraction etc. However, it was quite hard to initially learn to go about what to do as we had not been taught how to search, or what to search. But beacuse of having to learn ourselves, I think it made us learn more and remember better everything that we had learnt. Probably it would have been better if the tutorials had not been conducted in such a rushed manner, making us fail to grasp what was being taught. More time should be allocated. Other than that, this has been a very good learning experience.

160.In my opinion i think this project has provided me with the great opportunity to gain new knowledge on the use of in silico based experiments which requires only a click of a mouse to obtain direct and rapid results. This is certainly a different way for doing experiments especially for biology based students like us. I believe that this project had benefitted many of us and i believe so because i did. I enjoyed this project thoroughly and after its completion i felt a sense of achievement for doing something that i had never tried before. Also this project had forged many bonds between friends as we learn to help each other and offer help when needed. The TAs especially Bhuvana and Justin who are very dedicated helped me a lot during the course of this project. This project had also boosted my IT skills and i really benefitted in the whole embarkation of this project. Basically i think this whole project is a good idea and this should be continued in the modules to come. I believe that this project would benefit many and may prove to be one of the many life skills required to survive in the research based type of jobs in the future. However i think it would be best that in the future, the deadline of the project be extended in view of students who have to juggle between many deadlines and tests during the period of the assigned project.

163.It allows us to learn how to use the tools and databases and make webpage. Good experience but we had to spend alot of time for 15% worth of marks. The briefing and even tutorial was not very clear becuase they were many things that we are unsure of even after the tutorials on the project. Many steps and as to why we had to do certain things were not explained. We had to go back to TA for further consultations or had to spend alot more time in trying out. Though the objectives were clear, poor explaination made us spend alot more time in trying to understand what to do. Alot of time is also spend to redo the webpage each time we change filename due to the sentivity of server to space.Alot of students faced problems of links not working. There should be more emphasis on how to save filenames and things to take note to prevent problems during uploading. We'll have to make alot of changes when such tings happen.

I think it is possible to do away with the lectures and have more lab sessions. Do away with the lectures or shorten it. Have more lab sessions and also, have a rotation of groups for the lab sessions. i.e. on alternate labs, have groups D-F have it at 2-4. It'll be much fairer to all groups.

186.This project was a good idea to help us become not only familiar with different tools but also to make us concious of how these tools put together can help us make deductions and aid in experimental design for wet-lab. The open ended approach to the project was what most other assignments in NUS lack and is what is required to develop thinking and creativity. This was a great experience in terms of the wholistic overview it provided. Skills like introduction to regular expressions, query formats for entrez and SRS, making html queries, basic perl would make this project a more enriching experience. Also we could be formally introduced to the different type fo sequence classes etc. as this would help in using Bio-Perl modules. Our objective should be not to only learn the tools but also some basics of how we could develop one not merely theoretically.

As such, we learned how to operate the various programs and databases but couldn't really grasp the importance of the operations we were carrying out. I don't know if it is logistically possible, but preferably we should have smaller practical groups as the TAs I feel were too overloaded to really do their job well.

SIT SOON TUCK SCI11000@nus.edu.sg 3/3/2003

191.I feel that it a great satifisfaction when u finally finish the whole project. It about learning from mistakes and working with the TA closely.

SOH LI YAN SCI10946@nus.edu.sg 11/3/2003

192.This project have give me a hand-on practice of what i have learn from this modules instead of just memorising fact from the notes. The instructions for the miniproject is not very clear.

SOH TECK GUAN SCI10034@nus.edu.sg 10/3/2003

193.very interesting, except for instances when people like me do the project the last minute and get fed up of all the blasts and stuff we had to do :) ! not anything at the moment

SOMASUNDERAM PRAVEEN SCI11227@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

194.it is a very efficient way for us to learn sequence alignment. We not only gained the idea of sequence comparison but also experienced the feeling of doind this in silico experiment i think during the lectures, lecturer should show us the idea of BLAST etc by clicking on the mouse instead of just keep telling us the theory. perhaps, give more examples in the slides.

SOO CHENG LI SCI11068@nus.edu.sg 9/3/2003

195.It was fun and interesting. But I put off doing it, therefore it was not up to standard. Learnt many new things

TAI JIAYU SCI10454@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

196.well, this project is good to learn the IT-based knowledge on biology view it's good enough already

TAN AI VEE SCI11100@nus.edu.sg 1/3/2003

197.It was intimidating at first, but just as A/P Tan Tin Wee had 'forewarned', it grew to be really fun and interesting. I have also achieved a better understanding of the use of databases and analytic tools. Initially, I didn't quite understand the purpose of each database/analytic tool but after this project, most doubts have certainly been cleared up. It's a great sense of achievement to do a webpage (for the first time!) although what I did was really simple. It also feels great to have cleared up doubts on certain topics in LSM2104, via my own 'trials and errors' in this project. This is certainly a 'thinking' kind of project. Although it was tough (especially when deadlines for lots of projects seem to converge around the same time), this is certainly something that is worth doing. This request might seem quite impossible but it would be great if we have more TAs available. Every session has a certain number of students and more often than not, everyone has a question for the TAs. A lot of us end up waiting to ask our questions, so most of each practical session was spent on waiting.

TAN CHOON HONG SCI10652@nus.edu.sg 2/3/2003

198.It is an interesting and refreshing idea to let us set up our own webpage to present our results and findings and to put into practice how to use biological databases. However, the project is not easy to do as it is the first time we follow such a scientific way of research. For first-timers like me, setting up a webpage also poses some minor problems.

TAN CHUNHUI SCI10431@nus.edu.sg 1/3/2003

199.This project give us a chance to practice all the technics that we have learned. It is functional and conducive. In my opinion, for such a heavy project, its percentage should be higher than 15%, maybe 30% is more appropriate. Thus we can spend more time on it and would learn more things.

TAN HUI KO SCI11145@nus.edu.sg 3/3/2003

200.I think it is very interesting. I learn a lot more from doing the project than just attending lectures. Also very exciting to 'discover' new genes. Objectives of the project have not been elucidated from the beginning, even after the rather lengthy briefing. The concensus I get is that no one knows what is going on. Also it might be better to give students all three steps at the same time, so that we can do it at our own pace, at our own time.

TAN JIAN XIN SCI10596@nus.edu.sg 2/3/2003

201.I think I spent too much time on this project, but hey! I find the experience of creating my first web page rewarding and fulfilling :) Definitely enjoyed myself!

TAN KEE CHIN SCI10018@nus.edu.sg 2/3/2003

202.Good chance to be familiar with the use of various databases and interpretation of analysis results. Also an opportunity to handle website creation. The searching for new genes etc. can be further improved by allocating each student or group of students, say, a particular chromosome locus to work on, or a particular neighbouring genome to explore. Saves time and avoids too much overlap.

TAN SIEW HOON SCI10108@nus.edu.sg 11/3/2003

205.This research project is really a great learning opportunity. I have met several difficulties such as hyperlinking the wrong file by linking it to my A: file instead of uploading the sub-files first before hyperlinking. Such problems were solved by trial and error. I grew from someone who knows nothing about forming webpage to now being able to do online biological research and able to make webpages. It has given me a sense of confidence and acheivement. This mini project is really an enriching experience. I would really like to thank Prof Tan and Teaching Assistant Chen Xin for their invaluable help and guidiance. I really enjoy this project. Thank You very much!

TAN SOON SHAN SCI10782@nus.edu.sg 14/3/2003

206.This project can be fun to do but due to my very limited knowledge on webpages, I very often got problems eg. when uploading the files. I think the tutorial shd be taught earlier. that will give us more time to digest and understand what is expected of us before we do the project

TAN YEN LING,JESSIE SCI10482@nus.edu.sg 4/3/2003

209.This project is very meaningful and from this, I learnt a lot of useful bioinformatic skills. I think that the dateline is too early. Though we had the recess wk to prepare, but I'm sure a lot of students like me, are too busy studying for tests rather than starting on this project. So if given enough time,I'm sure I would do a better job.

210.it's very interesting and helps us to understand this module better

TAY PEI LING,DOLLY SCI10904@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

211.It is beneficial generally as it allows us to learn the way to do reasearch in later part of the our lives The lectures are not beneficial. I feel its the hands-on experience that really makes learning effective ion practicals and tutorials. Perhaps the next lsm2104 lecture for next sem can be conducted in computer labs for more hands-on experience

TAY THIAM MENG SCI11306@nus.edu.sg 10/3/2003

212.It's very interesting but quite difficult to understand at some parts especially regarding finding unknown genes

213.It enables me to have a better understanding of the lectures. You never know how little you know, until the very moment that you start this project. I think doing the project during the lab session will be a good idea. At least, you won't feel so lost, that's what i felt when i started the project.

215.i like it cos it's a new experience and although we can get really lost at times, the kind TAs will guide us. So i think i have learnt something new have more T.As if not we have to waste time 'queing up' for them. I hope Prof Tan could be more succint in his lectures(no offence)=)

TEO EN YA,CAROLE (ZHANG WENYA) SCI10612@nus.edu.sg 28/2/2003

216.i think it gives me a chance to learn the tactics of creating a webpage. Through this, i have a better hands on session on using the sites like NCBI,SWISS-Prot etc . In addition, interpreting the results was also a highlight of this project I have divided my project according to the various steps taken. So there are 5 html files but they are linked via the main page. One can start by clicking the picture on the main page.I hope this format is acceptable, and there are links to the other html files via the bar that i have created at the top. Overall, this was a proj that made me START learning to use IT to the maximum! Great in this sense!

TEO POH BOON SCI11131@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

219.fun when you have familiar with the process the front page is not provided and if we have to do it in lab it will be very troublesome to transfer here and there. it would be better if we are provided the software :)

TEO YEH YIING SCI10821@nus.edu.sg 13/3/2003

220.This project is quite interesting and let us have the hand on experience on what we had done for this module on the usage of biological databases and brush up on our IT skills. Even though it was quite hard to start with at first but as you get the hang of it, it is not that difficult. May be before the very start of this project we should be taught during the practical on all the databases. As for this semester we are only taught on the very basic database on GenBank and SWISS-PROT and not introduce to the BLAST and CLUSTALW tool so it was quite difficult to start the project as it is basically on these alignment tools.

TEO YIFEN SCI10719@nus.edu.sg 14/3/2003

221.It is a very challenging and informative project Maybe more sessions could be provided to explain the methods on how to go about the project as many people are still rather unsure even after practicals.

TEO ZHENZHI SCI10583@nus.edu.sg 9/3/2003

222.this project is very tedious because of the numerous searches that has to be carried out, otherwise it is quite enjoyable.

TIONG HUI MIN SCI10382@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

223.It was very interesting to do and it allowed me to learn how to do many things: i enjoyed the hands-on part of it. however, i had many doubts regarding how to go about the project. for example, i was unclear about what exactly i had to do with the genes. This CA should be carried out after the lecture series regarding this had been done, rather than during the CA period itself. The tutorials could be a lot more extensive and specific in demonstrating to us what we exactly were looking out for, and how it connected with the lecture series.

TOW TINGTING,CHARLENE SCI10615@nus.edu.sg 14/3/2003

226.too time-consuming tutorial was good no doubt, but shouldn' we have more sessions guiding us through the project, not in front of the whiteboard, but in front of the computer??????? my tutor was very good. however i would have wished there was more time spent in tutorials in the comp. lab instead of on briefings. wouldn't it be more practical instead of paying lip service?

TOW WHEY YEE,MELISSA SCI11186@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

227.I felt that the project enabled me to have a hands-on experience especially with building a webpage. Having also to find information from databases to present in the webpage also made the task more interesting as one comes into contact with an avalanche of information that needs to be selectively applied onto the webpage. A big "thank you" should go to my TA Bernett Lee for answering my endless queries...On the whole the project was an experience that allowed me to overcome a huge sense of apprehension that always deters me from doing anything related to IT.

230.It is a good idea to have a CA based on webpage creating, and through it, I have had a better understand of blast which I was quite confused beforehand. However, creating a webpage is a bit time consuming, as I spent quite a lot of time on the layout design, by using photoshop and other softwares. Just cannot stop myself from doing this.:(

233.This project is quite interesting as I can learn html skills. However it was quite confusing as to what I was supposed to do especially in the 2nd step. But this cld be because I have never done anything related to bioinfomatics before. Perhaps more could be explained before giving us this project to do, such as Kegg and taxonomy how-to-do or how-to-interpret. The breif introductions in the tutorials were not enought in my opinion.

YEO LOON CHEW ENG90323@nus.edu.sg 8/3/2003

246.I think that this project is a good way to allow us to put what we have learnt in lectures and practicals to use. I feel that the time allowed for the project should be lengthen because many of us are new to the idea of using biodata base and the interpretation of results. More time given will allow us to obtain more accurate results.

YEO PEI JIA SCI10696@nus.edu.sg 28/2/2003

247.It is a good way of teaching students to use the various databases and tools. On top of that it allowed people like me who have never created a webpage to have the chance to do so. The TAs have been very helpful.

YEO SU LING,SERENE SCI10890@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

248.It is a extremely thought provoking and challenging project. It exposes students to the cutting edge of computer technologies in Life Sciences. I wish I had more time... This is an interesting course for beginners! Dr. Tan has been thoughtful for not including too much computer jargons and mathematics in this course. He is a good facilitator who is understanding and prompt at replying to students' requests. It is enjoyable to be taught by him. :o)

YEO YEE SCI10023@nus.edu.sg 4/3/2003

249.This project is very time-consuming. Although it is a very good experience to create my webpage, I didn't really enjoy the process as I really could not get some information that can help me write my conclusion better. However, doing this project has familiarised me with BLAST and ClustalW search.

YONG WEI YAN,JACKLYN SCI10828@nus.edu.sg 15/3/2003

250.This project in the form of webpage is interesting and a new way to assess the progress of students on their use of software and databases. Though it is interesting to learn how to create a webpage, it uses up considerable time to learn it for beginners, and since most beginners might just produce the webpage as they would a word document, why not juat ask them to submit a soft copy of a word document? The objective and the content of the project is not clear enough, though there are some things which are required to be done by the student. If what is wanted, and the objective is spelt clear enough, students will not be at a loss as to what needs to be in the project. Also, why not a group project? Although the web page is not suppose to use up a lot of our time, the research itself uses up too much of our time, even without learning to do the web page

YOUNG WAI KEONG,VINCENT SCI10099@nus.edu.sg 2/3/2003

251.This project is very interesting. From doing website by ourselves, we gain some practical skills either in analysing genetical data, or making website. i have heard last sem students said that the genetical data's accuracy are preferred more than website skills during the teacher's marking project progress. I think that is not so fair. Since the module name is bioinfomatics and biocomputing, the computing part should get the same importance as infomatics. So that i suggest that lecturers may balance the preferrence in order to make it more lively and interesting

ZHAO FAN SCI00018@nus.edu.sg 9/3/2003

252.A very fun project, but not that easy to do. In this project, there are many new things to do, like lots of web searching, webpage making. But too many things may make us confused at sometimes... No
